Chapter 14

A chorus of crickets sang outside the window. The moonlight was so bright she couldn’t sleep. The reason could also be because John slept downstairs. He was spending the night sleeping on the couch in the living room. It would do no good to be sound asleep up in the carriage house if Killian were to break in the house. So until the threat was gone, he would be close by.

Yes, he’d made her smile. Even now, a grin still lingered. He was so wrong for her. Yet it was hard to explain the mix of emotions he created. The man challenged her, yet never spoke down to her. He teased, but never made fun. His compliments, whether on her cooking or driving, only encouraged her to do better.

They had argued again about telling Daniel about Killian, but he respected her decision. Daniel had enough to worry about without adding her troubles to the mix. She rubbed her eyes and yawned. Sleep still eluded her. Even with her lids shut, two faces took turns flashing before her, Killian’s and John’s. One brought a frown and one still made her smile, even though she’d made a fool of herself trying to get him to run away with her. Did she trust him enough to really do it?

A soft breeze touched her bare skin. Would he sweep her off her feet and make love to her? From the whispers of others, she’d heard it didn’t take much encouragement for a man to want to make love to a woman. Was he worth the risk of letting him break her heart?

Groaning in defeat, she rolled to her side. Men. They were complication, and so far they had all disappointed her. Her father was held in high esteem and yet he was crooked. Her brother was the sheriff and yet he was on the take. And John? He’d worked for Al Capone.

She may not trust John, but at least he was teaching her to trust herself.
